Eminem goes “Berzerk” with “Survival”
Marshall Bruce Mathers, more popularly known by his stage name Eminem launched two singles “Berzerk” and “Survival” towards the later part of 2013. These songs by the American rapper are the first and the second singles respectively from his eighth studio album named after his original name called “The Marshall Mathers LP 2”.
The “Berzerk” song debuted on the US Billboard hot 100 at number three position as it was heavily downloaded in its first week of release. It sold 362,000 downloads in US its first week itself. This made the single his 15th Top 10 hit on this chart. However, the “Survival” song could barely make it to 16th position on the chart.
Even on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart the “Berserk” single peaked at number two. This hit hip-hop song produced by Rick Rubin is a cocktail of typical Eminem’s punchy flavor and old school classic hip-hop. Will Hermers of Rolling Stone and Robert Copsey of Digital Spy have both given the song 4 out of 5 stars. With over a million copies being sold in US within two months of release, the single is a testimony to Eminem’s popularity and merit of his individualistic style. However the “Survival” song has been trashed down by many critics for being cliched.
The Detroit rapper has poured his heart out in the single reminiscing about his early period of struggle and rejection in “Berzerk”. Though his original style of work, this singles does have hints of influence of the Beastie Boys. He also pays homage to iconic Hip-Hop artists like The MC Ren of N.W.A., Public Enemy, and Beastie Boys in this single.
His satirical jabs at modern-day hip hop artists like Birdman and Timbaland makes the song lyrics juicy and contemporary. With “Berserk”, his brash and cocky style is back to make his fans croon to his Slim Shady later ego!
However, “Survival” fails to follow the success achieved by “Berzerk” with its hard hitting and ear jamming musical cacophony. Enjoy the songs!!
